Houston, TX – November 11, 2008, Alex Merricks signs with the New York Mets. Merricks, a 24-year-old left-handed pitcher from Oxnard, CA will begin his journey to the Majors with the Mets organization. A 4th round selection in 2002 with the Twins, he played in the GCL from 2002-2004. In 2008, after a few years away from the game, he joined the San Angelo Colts of the UBL under manager Doc Edwards. In 25 innings with the Colts, Merricks was used mainly as a relief pitcher.
This off-season, Merricks has been throwing in the low to mid 90’s while hitting 95. He looks to make a major impact within the organization and help the Mets bullpen in 2009. Merricks said, “This is just another stepping stone on the path to my goals. I am very excited to be in the Mets organization and I look forward to helping the club with their continued success.” Mets Scouting Director, Rudy Terrasas said, “The Mets are glad to be able to come to terms with Alex. We really like his arm and potential.” Alex will report to Spring Training in Port St. Lucie, FL, which will officially begin his career as a Met.
